Lower Tryweryn

Last weekend at Canoe Kayak Trader we ran a river trip down the Lower Tryweryn for a group of young paddlers that were looking for the next step up from their last trip on the River Dee. It all started off with an early start as we were meeting the group at 10am and we were leaving from Coventry. After getting kitted up it was time to start the session with a warm up game of eddy hopping on land to get the guys in the right mind set for what was ahead.
As soon as we got on the river we were straight in to the action and all the guys on the course had big smiles on their faces and looked ready for the sections of river that lay ahead of them. After a couple of hours eddy hopping our way down the river and a few swims later it was time for a lunch stop.
After lunch we looked a bit more at some ww skills, stopping in a nice section of the river were we could work on braking in and out, s turns and ferry gliding. Most of the group achieved a white water roll which was awesome. We all then headed down the rest of the lower until we reached Bala mill falls where the group portaged – maybe next time?!
The day ended with a quick debrief and some much needed chips! Thank you to the entire group for making it a great day out, mums and dads for being fantastic shuttle bunnies, and congratulations to everyone on passing 3 star! Hope to see you on the river soon
Cheers Alex Below is a review of the day from the eyes of one of the young paddlers, James May
We got on the water about 300m downstream of the rafting centre, and straight away headed down some pretty bouncy grade 2 rapids. It was like this for the rest of the day - including some very rocky runs, large waves and many grade 2/3 rapids- until we reached Bala mill falls (which we portaged). We all got our 3 stars, practicing ferry gliding, breaking in and out, and rolling in moving water. I was the only person not to swim - until the end, when my friends pushed me in! My favourite part was a grade 2 rapid, with numerous rocks for us to try not to get pinned against. It was a great day out, thanks to CKT for providing this brilliant day. James.
